PS: There are professional

PS: There are professional sports beyond NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB. Soccer has 90 minute games with few players not playing the full 90 minutes. They also have only a single break so the have to maintain the intensity for 45 minutes straight, nearly the entire length of a NHL match. And we wont mention the size of the NHL bench and the frequency that it is used.

Swimming

Are you kidding? Why the heck do you think swimmers have to eat 5000-7000 calories a day??? We workout 3-4 hours every single day. I have played basically every other sport and they are easy in comparison. I am stronger and faster than any kid at my school. It is rediculous how much disregard swimming recieves.

Hockey - Without a doubt - at

Hockey - Without a doubt - at least for a sport with a real professional league - the most physically demanding card sport in existence is probably rowing. But when I played hockey - a guy tried out for our team who was a sponsored triathlete and cross country skier - he thought it would be a piece of cake but dropped out after one week of practice because it was too physically demanding!

Tuning...

Cars can have great engines that are tuned for different results. I think two humans could both be in great shape but have bodies tuned for different purposes. A Cross-Fit athlete may have superb all-round fitness. Does that mean he/she would be able to run sprint/jog intervals necessary to perform well on a soccer pitch for 90 MINUTES? On the flip side would a soccer player be able to do as many wall-balls and kip-ups as the Cross-Fit athlete? Could a kettlebell enthusiast last three rounds in an MMA ring? Could an MMA fighter snatch a 53-kg bell 200 times in 10 minutes? Ultimately an athlete gets good at what he/she does. IMHO, the key is to supplement with training techniques and strategies that enhance and take that doing/performance to the next level while protecting the body long term and not destroying it. The goal is a great running car that lasts a lifetime not one that falls apart after taking a few checkered flags.

NHL

NHL hockey players are the in the best shape of all athletes. They must be physically fit in all areas and play more active minutes than any other professional sport. the NFL typically only has 12 minutes of active play in a game... the NHL has 60.

UFC all the way!

I'd have to go with UFC/MMA fighters on this one.  Those guys are in sick shape.  Have you ever tried to fight all out for one, let alone three five minute rounds.  Their strength, stamina, flexibility and toughness combined has to rank them near the top.
